As Muslims are the median religious group among other religions, the people of Sunnah and Congregation (AhlAssunahwalJama'ah) is the median sect among Muslims.
They are median between two extremes in the chapter of Allah's attributes. They are between those who deny or negate the attributes of Allah, and those who attribute human qualities to Allah (i.e., anthropomorphism). The people of Sunnah describe thier Allah through the attributes which Allah describes Himself with, and which His Messenger described Allah with, without negation, denial or resemblance. They confirm all those authentic attributes which are all perfect in nature, yet they deanthropomorphize Allah from all human qualification which the other sects attributed to Allah.
Allah says: "There is nothing like unto Him" (42:11) thus, refuting all anthropomorphists, and He says: " ..and He is Hearing and Seeing", thus refuting those who negate all attributes of Allah. Also, Allah says: "Say He is Allah, Ahad (i.e.,One), Allah the Samad, He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent" [112]. Here Samad means the noble majesty who deserves all perfect attributes, and Ahad means who has no resemblance or second example.
In the chapter of Allah's actions, the people of Sunnah again are median between two extremes. They are between the Mutajilites who deny the Divine decree of Allah, and the Jabriah, who deprive Allah's action from any wisdom, mercy or justice, and push this decree forward as an excuse against the commands of Allah.
In the chapter of reward and punishment, again the people of Sunnah are median between two extremes. They are median between the Khawarij who believe that the sinners among the Muslims are destined for eternal stay in Hellfire, and the Murjiah who deny many punishments and equate the difference between the pious and the wicked.
In the chapter of Companions of our Prophet - peace be upon him-, they are again median between two extremes. They are median between those who exaggerate in veneration of some companions and make them God or Prophet or free-from-sin (i.e., Shiia) and those who disrespect them and brand them with infidelity or wickedness, whereas they are the best among the followers of Prophet Muhammad - peace be upon him.
